Dream Getaways

Filed in odds and ends

I like to travel.

No, wait, scratch that.   I LOVE to travel.  So much so it doesn’t really matter where I go, just as long as I go

And do

And have new experiences.

I guess you could say it’s my thing.

Which brings me to this week’s post–one designed to let me live vicariously through you.

Tell us your favorite place to vacation and why. Share a few must-see/must-do things pertaining to that trip.

C’mon, entice me into adding yet another destination to my personal vacation bucket list (Ireland, Australia’s beaches, Grand Teton, Hawaii, Maine…).

I’ll chime in with one of my most recent favorite trips after the conversation gets going in the comment section.

OK, the most exotic and interesting place I have been is Bagan, Myanmar (the old Burma). It is an ancient city with over 1,000 stupas, many covered in gold. When you climb up one there is a field of them in every direction. To me, it was more exciting than Anchor Wat. I want to return! I love to travel!!!

Great list of places to see! Colorado is wonderful. The Rocky Mountains in Estes Park are just gorgeous! Rocky Mountain National Park has several fantastic hiking trails. Riding the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway in southwestern Colorado has some spectacular views of the Anamas River. Another favorite place of mine is Mackinac Island.

    Mary, Burma sounds wonderful!

Beth, the Rocky Mountains is one I’d like to see. I love to hike and I bet it’s just gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to go water water rafting…I bet they have some good spots in that area!

Last fall I went on a cruise to the Bahamas. I couldn’t believe how gorgeous the water was by the Atlantis. But my favorite part was snorkeling off the ship’s private island. The shark sighting below got me a little freaked out…but the rest was awesome. Wish I could go back right now.

No exotic foreign travels for me yet. My sister went to Tibet two years ago and walked on the wall. I’ve always wanted to go to England, France, China, and Russia. Right now I just want to go somewhere with a beach, and no swine flu epidemic.

Place’s I’ve been that were amazing: the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho (think Sun Valley), the Oregon Coast, Seattle Washington, Coure de Alene, Idaho (famous for the floating golf hole on the lake.) Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach and Los Angeles.

My son will probably be traveling soon. He’s going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. I just found out tonight. So I may be in Seattle sooner than later.

My fave vacation spot is Stowe, Vermont. Gorgeous in summer or winter. Not sure it’s for you–no beach!

My daughter and I are saving change to put toward a vacation “someday”. Maybe Paris, maybe Hawaii. Right now we’re leaning toward Hawaii, but that might be because we’re wintered out.

Lynn, congrats to your son! How exciting!

Lynn, I bet the Orgeon Coast is pretty. There are so many places here in this country that I want to see. Would love to hit all of the states at some point. And woo-hoo on your son! Congrats!

Heather, I could do Vermont. I like to hike. But I’d lean more toward summer than winter, I think. Love the idea of saving change for a trip with your daughter! And I’m with you on being wintered out. I just wish we could have a little spring without going straight to summer and ninety degrees!

I’m with Heather on Stowe. Hike it in autumn, and you’ll walk through some of the most breathtaking foliage in the U.S. of A.

Here’s one more to add to your list: Whitefish, Montana. It’s near Glacier National Park. Wonderful place to go for a hike. Have the huckleberry coffee while you’re there–or in your case, the huckleberry hot chocolate.

Both Stowe and Whitefish attract interesting people, and offer nifty little inns nestled in lush mountains. I’ve made fast friends while taking photos in both states. Must be the huckleberries…

I know Florida is overrated and Disney is expensive, but there is a lot to do on the East Coast, not too far from Disney and well worth the time.

Off of Route 192, there are airboat rides that take you to see the alligators (our captain actually had lost a few fingers thanks to a hungry alligator). The place looks like it belongs on the bayou – very rustic, but the kids got a kick out of it.

Off of I95, about 30 minutes south of Disney, there is the Brevard County Zoo – AWESOME!! Rhinos, monkeys, croc feedings, free-flying aviary, but my favorite part is the giraffes – you can actually feed and pet them! They have hundreds of acres to run on, but when they come to visit the humans, fun is had by all.

Kennedy Space Center is in Cocoa Beach, about an hour and 45 minutes south of Orlando. Great history lesson for the kids! It gives you a whole new perspective on NASA. If you are lucky, you may actually see a shuttle laungh – VERY COOL. Not too far from there is the Cocoa Beach Pier which has lots of shops, restaurants and a bar at the end of the pier. Lots of fishing and sightseeing. While in Cocoa, don’t forget to go to Ron Jon’s – very fun.

And the beaches……every few miles, another public beach (with bathroom facilities)….clean, boardwalks, restaurants……kind of like being a native.

With our families in Florida, it is our usual vacation spot, but I’m not a Disney fan…..love Sea World, but that’s about as “commercial” as I get.

    Julie,

Brevard County Zoo rocks! The staff is friendly, and the tropical atmosphere is unique–even among zoos in Florida. As I recall, you can rent a kayak and paddle out into the marsh there. Excellent suggestion!
