Hobby, Passion…It’s All The Same

Posted under odds and ends 7 Comments

When I was little, I considered writing a “hobby”. It was something I enjoyed doing.

As I got older, my hobby turned into a passion…one I wanted to pursue as a career. But no matter what I called it, writing was something that made me happy.

Today, I still love writing. Probably even more than ever. And since I’m focusing the bulk of my time/energy on it these days, I’m not sure it qualifies as a true “hobby” any longer… Except for the fact that a) I love it, b) I love to talk about it, c) I love to be around others who write, and d) I dream about it.

Which keeps the word “hobby” from disappearing into the stratosphere, doesn’t it?

So what was a childhood hobby of yours? What’s your hobby now? And what (if anything) does it bring to your life?

A Dream Come True

Posted under odds and ends 8 Comments
By now, SEW DEADLY, has officially been out for a week. There’ve been sightings of it in bookstores in Iowa, New York  (all areas), the the midwest, North Carolina, etc. It’s out there…everywhere.

For a little girl who used to dream of being a published author, it is very cool to walk into a Barnes & Noble and see a display of my books! It’s also a little scary.

Why, you ask? Because now the part that’s largely out of my control begins. Sure, I’m touring (through the midwest this coming week) and sending out bookmarks (email me if you’d like one) via snail mail, and notes via email…but when you consider the volume of books out there all across the country, you realize just how much word-of-mouth you need to make a dent.

Which is where all of you come in. If you buy the book and like it, PLEASE spread the word. Or purchase an extra copy as a gift for someone you think will enjoy it. You don’t have to be a sewer to enjoy this story. It’s why I centered it around the socialization aspect (the circle of friends getting together to sew) rather than the actual craft itself.

This is truly an exciting time. Exciting and scary.

In the meantime, I want to share this picture with you. It’s from my launch party on Friday night at Main Street Books in St. Charles, Missouri. That’s me in the middle. 😉

Me and my girls.

Me and my girls.

So what was your dream when you were little? Did it come true? Or did another dream take over? I’d love to hear from you!

The Wait Is Finally Over

SEW DEADLY hits the shelves this week and I couldn’t be more thrilled! It’s a dream come true, really. And one I tend to enjoy to the hilt.

First up? Haunting a few bookstores on launch day (Tuesday) just to see if it’s on the shelves yet (if you squint at your computer screen really hard right now you can probably see me crossing my fingers…and my toes for good measure).

Next? Hitting the road for a tour of some of my favorite independent bookstores throughout the midwest! This is the part I’m most excited about–getting out, meeting readers, being around people who “get it.” I’ve met so many wonderful people since I started writing…readers who have become close friends, readers I’ve never met in person yet supported me in my first ever Walk For MS in 2008, readers who send me emails that make me smile.

So…if you’re in the vicinity of any of my gigs over the next two weeks, stop by (check my events page for specific dates/times/locations)!! Or, if you’d like to learn more about the book, visit and click on their August 4th blog (SEW DEADLY is front and center)!

Stop back next week when I hope to have some fun tales from the road I can share with all of you!
