Dating…Yourself?
I’m one of those strange people who doesn’t mind being alone. To think. To dream. To function.
Maybe that’s because, when I’m alone, there’s no one scrutinizing, or judging, or waiting to point out this flaw or that shortcoming. Or maybe it’s simply a sign that I’m comfortable in my own skin.
Either way, one of my “alone” things over the last few years is to take myself on a movie date (complete with Milk Duds and water, of course). Sometimes, I’m the only one in the theater. Sometimes, I’m the only one by myself. Either way, it doesn’t matter. I’m there to enjoy the show.
Just last night I went off to see The Time Traveler’s Wife only to find it wasn’t showing at the theater. So, after consulting the pictures out front, I chose an alternative: All About Steve. I had my Milk Duds. I had my water. And I had a relatively empty theater despite the fact the movie isn’t all that old.
All in all I’d say it was cute, serving its purpose as a nice diversion. But the one I’m really looking forward to seeing? Love Happens with Jennifer Aniston…
Which means I’ve got another date on the horizon.
So how about you? Do you ever treat yourself to a date? If so, what’s a favorite?

I so want to see the Time Travelers Wife. And Love Happens which is set in Seattle, one of my favorite cities. What about Steve sounds fun.
My “dates” with myself is usually writing related. Like this week I’m going to a lecture from Angie Fox, the Accidental Demonslayer author. So I’ll work late, eat dinner at a little chinese place near the bookstore and then hit the lecture. I’ll probably even walk the bookstore and drool over the books. (Must not buy any new books ….)

Oooh, I have a writing-related date coming up, too. I’m driving about 45 minutes north to check out an RWA meeting later this month.
And, Lynn, I KNOW that chinese restaurant. *Sniff* *Sniff* Have a fortune cookie for me, okay? *Sniff*

I normally take myself to the movies and have to have my twizzlers and slurpee drink. I wanted to see Julie & Julia but it wasn’t playing so I saw G.I. Joe which was enjoyable.

Twizzlers, huh? Hmmm. Now I have a sudden craving for them, Dru. The red ones.
I saw Julie & Julia a few weeks ago. It was good. My favorite part though, was the relationship between Julia and her husband. Got me misty-eyed a few times. Especially at the end. It’s still playing around here (in NY area) so maybe you can still find it somewhere!

It’s playing in the city – so I’ll have to go after work.

My “dates” involve pulling out my writing supplies, putting them on the back porch and making a pot of caffinated coffee. Then spending the entire day outside writing and drinking caffinated coffee.
Sadly, I haven’t been the movies for ages. I did buy The Other Boylen Girl. It was good.

Hey Sharon – gotta love the coffee. Have no idea how Hemmingway could write while drinking. My son bought me a carafe so I could stay by the computer. I’ve been carrying around a notebook again to plot in and grab all those random ideas that hit while I’m working. Or when I meet one of my characters in real life.
But your “date” sounds terrific.

I wonder if that’s why I’m okay being alone, Sharon…because my comfort is in thoughts and observations and all the things that go into writing (a largely solitary profession). Hm…

I love a good social event, but I love my days being mine. I can’ figure out how to link your blog to mine. Any ideas?
