Name Your Candy

***Warning: If you don’t want to hear your tummy grumble, don’t read this post.***

Okay, now that I’ve done my civic duty, let’s get down to business, shall we?

When I’m on deadline I tend to snack–candy corn candy-cornand a glass of milk being my treat of choice during the final push. Yum!

When I’m not on deadline, I tend to go for Milk Duds and, occasionally, a Score Bar.

But when I was a little girl, I had different favorites–favorites that are more than a little hard to find these days…

curly-wurly_small

First, there was the Marathon Bar. Some of you may know them as Curly Wurly Bars, but those are imposters. :) marathon

The Marathon Bar was cooler…because it had a red wrapper with yellow writing like this…

And then, of course, there were the penny candies we got to pick out from time to time at the penny candy store. While my siblings would agonize over which candy to get, I went for the same ones time and time again. My choice? These guys right here…bb-bats_small

Mmmm, B B Bats. My favorite flavors were banana and vanilla (surprising, seeing as how I’m such a chocolate lover in every other way these days, huh).

So, there you have it–my personal candy-line  from childhood to now.  Good stuff, huh?

Now it’s your turn. What is/was some of your favorite candy?

I remember them costing a penny. Nowadays, I believe the price for penny candies are now a nickle.

I loved the B.B lollipops. Remember root beer barrels, mary janes, chick-o-sticks, chocolate babies, red hots. pixie stixs, the wax lip candy, candy necklace, the candy on the paper, chocolate coins.

Well today’s topic is a colorful stroll down Memory Lane!

I loved Marathon Bars. You could measure your progress, because the wrapper had a ruler printed on it. Mmm.

And the candies you mentioned, Dru…loved those! I also liked the wax bottles with fake juice inside.

And I’ll add Cosmic Candy, which popped against your teeth, and Volcano Rocks, which changed color in your mouth and were really tasty, as I remember.

We’d wash it down with a bottle of Coke or Pepsi. Real. Glass. Bottles.

    No twist-off caps.

Today, I’ll reach into the fridge for a yogurt, more often than not.

Oreo cookies are nice when we have ‘em.

Well, time for breakfast. Off to find some Count Chocula cereal…

For me anything chocolate and mint, love that combo. Always have and always will. Don’t care what brand/name just give it to me.

Dru, oooh I forgot about the candy necklaces. Those were always fun to eat! And I LOVED Mary Janes.

Joe, here’s an interesting tidbit. Do you remember that stuff that used to have the white stick that you dipped in the colored sugar? Used to make my tongue bleed. Weird, huh?
And I totally forgot the ruler on the wrapper!!! Now I remember doing just what you said…seeing how much I ate. Fun!

Nancy, does that mean you’re a Thin Mint fan (Girl Scouts)? I love the Tagalongs because I’m a huge chocolate/peanut butter combo fan.

I remembr the candies previously mentioned–aahh–good times! My fave were the Now-or-Laters, or in the south pronounced as “na-ah-laters”. I could sneak and have one after lunch at school because it would soften and then you could hold it against the roof of your mouth, the teacher was none the wiser (at least I think so!)

Those sticks with colored sugar are Lik-A-Sticks. They come with grape and cherry and sometimes ‘blue’ raspberry sugar. I used to be addicted to those, and when things go really, really bad, I still pick up one or two. But I like SweeTarts (especially the big chewy 3-pak)) much better, although I haven’t had any for at least 6 months. I loved Marathon Bars too, and I’m very glad they aren’t available anymore. I eat too much chocolate and other bad calorie items and don’t get enough exercise, and now I want to go to the store for some! Must. Resist. Teeth. Need. Work.

I LOVE Sweet Tarts — especially the new hens and chicks and bunny’s for easter. Not a fan of the chewy ones..

Junior mints were a fav as were Snickers. I still love paydays – salt and sugar, mmmmm.

We had two stores within biking distance and I’m old enough to remember penny candy. I loved the pixie sticks and candy necklaces, and anything with carmel…

Now it has to be Hersheys or better for me to waste the calories. Those Dove chocolates are heaven. Not a fan of Nestle. Maybe it’s a Coke/Pepsi kind of thing.

And I remember my mom buying me an 8 pack of RC cola in the 16 oz bottles each Saturday.

Thanks for the name, Kate, it totally escaped me!

Lynn, I’m with you on the Dove chocolates. Wow!

Reeses…there’s NO HIDING Reeses. Yum, Janet!

Frozen milky ways are awesome, Nikki! Especially on a hot day at the beach!

JD, I sure luv them Reesey Cups! ;)

Beth, a fellow candy corn eater? Yay!!! I like Sweet Tarts but only red and purple.

I am a huge chocolate covered cherries fan. I get them during most special occasions. And Reeces peanut butter cups. Carmello. And my special butter mints that just melt in your mouth. And Hot Tamales. Red licorice. Okay I have said enough. Now I will probably need a sugar fix soon.

Patty did you get the hershey kiss this chrismas that tasted just like a chocolate covered cherry? Ymmmm.

When I was a little girl, the only that that would truly delight me was a nice large Sugar Daddy. I could make that thing last all day – what a treat. If I had to, I could do with Sugar Babies, but they tended to disappear too quickly! The other substitute, Kraft caramels, ditto!

Patty, you just mentioned another of my candy loves: Carmello. YUM!!!!!! Oh, and sorry about the sugar fix thing. :)

Lynn, they have ones that taste like candy corn, too. But I haven’t tried them yet. It’s a loyalty thing, I think…

Mary, I love Sugar Daddy (s), too, though I haven’t had one in years!!! I liked to such them and make odd shapes at the end! I have had the babies recently and they were good, but they are certainly not as good as the Daddy!
