Over the River and Through the Woods
As most of you are reading this, I’m in the car and on the way to Ithaca, New York. I have a few book events I’m doing thanks to a terrific fan and friend who just happens to be a HUGE supporter of the mystery genre.
The drive, itself, will take me about four hours which means lots of time to think, plot, dream, sing at the top of my lungs, and eat.
Me? I’m a fan of music from the eighties. Which means I play a lot of CD’s and listen to the eighties station on my XM radio. On a long trip, like today’s, I also tend to toss in a few newer artists like Daughtry or some soundtracks like Tarzan. Anything, really, that is fun to sing with. And, since I’m alone in the car, no one can tell me I can’t sing.
Which brings us to the car treats that must accompany all long drives. My favorites? Bulls-eyes, Milk duds, and Bit o’ Honeys (two of which I rarely eat otherwise).
So tell me, what are some must-haves for your road trips?

Enjoy your book signing events. Any plans to do a book signing in NYC?
Since I don’t drive and I’m usually the passenger, on a long car trip I need Twizzlers, bottled water, Hot Tamales and Yodels.

Passport Radar Detector – Something about driving a red Mustang attracts the cops
Three Musketeer’s candy bars and diet coke.
I’ll assume we have similar tastes in the 80′s music, but some classic rock is also in the mix.

Soundtracks and books on CD are must-haves for solo trips far and away. I usually pack a digital recorder (for ideas) and a camera (if I don’t, I’ll wish I had). And ibuprofen, because traffic amps up my stress.
Sadly, or maybe fortunately, there are no Dunkin’ Donuts close to home, so I usually make a refueling stop at a gas station/DD in Tennessee for my annual hazelnut + two-donut fix.
Related topic–when you travel to places you’ve been before, are there certain shops you look forward to visiting, because you just don’t have ‘em at home?
For me, it’s Southern supermarkets, where the produce is so different from the Midwest (Yo Publix at St. Pete Beach–your checkers rock!) And Caribou Coffee, Peachtree Center, Atlanta: best service ever.

Dru, I’d like to get into the B & N in Lincoln Center in May…need to see if I can do that!
Chris C, Three Musketeers…Mmmm…
Joe, I like to hit little bookstores when possible. Piggly Wiggly in the south is always fun just cuz the name is cute!

My road trip supplies used to include cigarettes to keep from falling asleep. Now I’m a sugar freak. Coffee is a must. And red licorice, sour sweet tarts, jelly bean, and when I’m feeling a need to have something from a real food group, I add some beef jerky.
Songs – anything I can sing with. Some Les Miserables is always good. Or Dixie Chicks.
