Readers Polled
Filed in Reading Tuesdays
Today’s Reading Tuesday centers around a few reading-related questions.
1) Are you a peeker? Meaning, do you peek at the end of a book before you should?
2) Do you have an ideal reading environment?
3) Do you read multiple books at a time? If so, what’s the most you’ve had going at one time? And how do you keep track of the plots?
4) Are you a traditional book reader or an e-book reader? And why?
I must admit I’m very curious to read your answers…

1. No I don’t peek.
2. Not really. With kids I read where/when I can. At the ball field, in the car etc.
3. Yes I read multiple books. I try not to have multiple in the same Genre going at the same time. I’d think 3 or 4 books at the same time. Right now I have three: Granville Gazette (SciFi), Thoughtworks Anthology (Geek/Work) and 20,000 Leagues under the sea (Things I should have read as a kid
4. Both. I love the Kindle for jumping between books and being easy to carry. But for most technical books traditional is better. Though the Kindle PC application is useful for reference books since I can have it open in one window while working in another.
I also like the Kindle for immediate download if I want something I just saw or if I finish a book earlier than expected when traveling.

1. No, I don’t peek.
2. Curled up in my chair in the living room.
3. I only read one book at a time.
4. I LOVE my Kindle, especially for traveling. I do buy my favorite author’s new releases in hardcover, mainly because I think of it as a collection.

1) Are you a peeker? Meaning, do you peek at the end of a book before you should? No, but I’m a closer. Meaning I’ll close the book and cast it aside if it isn’t working for me.
2) Do you have an ideal reading environment? Nope. Pretty much anywhere, home and away.
3) Do you read multiple books at a time? If so, what’s the most you’ve had going at one time? And how do you keep track of the plots? Probably six. Plot tracking has never been a problem. If the characters and story aren’t distinct from other things I’m reading, I’ll drop the book and pick up something new.
4) Are you a traditional book reader or an e-book reader? And why? Traditional, because I haven’t bought an ereader. I expect that to change.

1. No, I prefer to be surprised. If, however, I don’t like the book and know that I won’t finish it, yes, I’ll take a peek to see how it ends.
2. in my home on my recliner next to my laptop. On the subway. At my office desk. Anywhere there’s a comfortable place to sit and relax.
3. I read one book at a time, but since I can read 5-6 books in a week, it can appear that I read more than one book.
4. I am a traditional book reader even though I have an e-reader.

1) I don’t peek. But I will say that I tend to peek ahead to the start of the next chapter when I’m “done” and then I always keep reading.
2) My ideal reading environment is in my bed with no one else around.
3) I’m a one-at-a-time kind of gal.
4) So far I haven’t gotten on the ebook reader bandwagon. Mostly because I don’t have the money to buy one at this point. But maybe one day… Though nothing beats the feel of a book in my hands.

1. Definitely not a peeker!
2. Really anywhere but I generally finish the day reading in bed.
3. Usually just one but may also be listening to an audiobook in the car.
4. I have a nook but prefer the ‘real thing’ .. the ereader is great for when you want a book right that minute or one that’s not on the shelves. I also like it because I can upload PDFs to read and try out some new things pretty inexpensively.

1. Not a peeker, but like Joe, I am a closer (tosser actually)!
2. Mostly in bed at night or favorite chair next to the window with the good light.
3. One mystery/thriller going while reading a nonfiction I can pick up anytime.
4. Surprised my DH by saying I wanted a Kindle for Christmas this coming year. But what would I put on my shelves then?? Dusty old things.

1. Nope, I never peek. I don’t remember who said it but there was a quote floating around a few years back about fit punishment for people who peek at the end of books. It wasn’t pretty.
2. My couch or my bed are my favorite places to read. But preferably when it’s cold, with a blanket and a cat (or two).
3. Oh yes, definitely a multiple book at a time reader. I think the most I’ve ever had going that I could keep up with efficiently was three, and that was pretty recently (there’s a post on my blog about it somewhere). I’ve never had a problem keeping up with the plots. Usually I have one going on my reader and one on my phone and sometimes even a paper book on the side…
4. I like to say I’m “all ebooks all the time” but that’s not really true. But I am committed to ebooks, and here’s why: I had a disastrous divorce/move several years back, and I couldn’t afford to ship an extensive collection of mysteries that my mom had started. It broke my heart. When I found out about ebooks and being able to carry anything I could possibly want to read with me in my purse or bag, and never ever have to move or ship heavy books again, I was hooked. I’ve never regretted it. I do get frustrated with the Publishers vs. Retailers wars, and when things aren’t available for ebook, but it’s worth it to me to not have to worry about losing my books again. And yes, I’m OCD about backups.

1) Are you a peeker? Meaning, do you peek at the end of a book before you should? OMG, It looks like I’m the only peeker. (That word looks really wrong…)
2) Do you have an ideal reading environment? Yes, where people aren’t bugging me. I’ve been getting a lot of reading done on lunch in our mini cafeteria. I grab a booth and open whatever book I’m reading. Currently, Death Threads.
3) Do you read multiple books at a time? If so, what’s the most you’ve had going at one time? And how do you keep track of the plots? I always have at least three up to six or more started. I have a book in the car, just in case, that I hadn’t picked up for a year but I went right back into the plot and remembered how much I didn’t like the story.
4) Are you a traditional book reader or an e-book reader? And why?
Give me a real book with pages. Although I can see the perks of going over to the dark side.

Shel, I think it’s awesome you’re so passionate about the e-readers and I understand EXACTLY how it came about. I had a nearly complete hardcover collection of all of MHC’s books (except the first 4 when I was too young to afford hardcover). When I moved for the reasons you said, I had to donate all of them to a local senior home just to minimize. Still makes me a little sad.
I am AMAZED by those of you who can read multiple books at a time.

1. I will fess up to being a former peeker. I ruined it when I did that w/ a Nicholas Sparks book once, totally ruined it for me. If the book has long chapters, I will look ahead to the end of the chapter to see if I have to wait till the end to stop reading for that time.
2. Ideal place to read–on the recliner, w/ a soft blanket, and a cat curled up with me.
3. I can’t read multiple books at a time, I just don’t have the brain power!! Lots of applause to those of you can do this!
4. I’m still a traditional book reader, but have been thinking about the eReader. I’ve read some downloaded books on my iPod (too small for my old eyes!). Maybe if I get a bonus at work this year I’ll get an eReader; I can see the benefit.

1. I never peek.
2. The best place to read is in bed or on the patio.
3. I usualy have two or three books going at a time.
4. I’m traditional in almost all senses of the word. I like to hold and own books. I’m not good at checking out books or borrowing them. I must own them.
