Whatcha Reading?

Posted under Reading Tuesdays 5 Comments

I’m off to B & N to get in some serious writing time today, but before I head back home I will be buying myself a copy of Harlan Coben’s latest book, THE STRANGER.  If I get my word count in for the week early, I might actually be able to read it over the holiday weekend.

What are you reading now? And what’s next on your To Be Read Pile after that?

~Elizabeth (aka Laura)

**Side  note for any fellow Coben readers out there, my name appears in the acknowledgements his 2014 book, MISSING YOU. That was super fun for me to see when it came out (although he send me a picture of it before the big day).

Instant Flashback

Posted under Dreamer Mondays 4 Comments

For those of you who were around in the 80’s, there are a handful of things that instantly rewind me back to that decade. Here are mine:

1) Leg warmers

2) Banana clips

3) Permed hair

4) cassette tapes

5) Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

What would you add?

Not A Single Warm And Fuzzy

Posted under Writing Thursdays 6 Comments

As I think I’ve probably mentioned here before, I tend to be “late to the party” when it comes to TV shows. I suppose some of that is because I’m not a TV watcher by nature. I watch Survivor (and HGTV while falling off to sleep), but that’s pretty much it.

A year ago, DH and I got a hold of Season 1 of a few past hits–Dexter, Castle, and Breaking Bad. We’ve been slowly working our way through these shows–alternating them as we go. We’ll watch a season of one show, then a season of another, and then the third before cycling back to the first show and its next season.

Now, while I admit the acting and the writing in Breaking Bad is good, I can’t stand the lead character. His motivation to get into his “line of work” never sat with me. Is it a shame he has cancer and is dying? Sure. Is it commendable he’s worried about his family when he’s gone? Sure. But the second he opted to look after them by destroying the lives of other people, any chance at being a character I could empathize with flew out the window.  And, as the show has progressed through each subsequent season, I’ve grown to despise him more and more. This character is, in a word, unredeemable.

It’s not just because he does bad things…so does Dexter.  But I kind of like Dexter (most of the time).  Walter White from Breaking Bad? I’ve had no feelings of empathy for this man at any point.  And now, as we’re just a few episodes away from the final show of the final season, he just watched my favorite character (the only one in the whole show who was decent) get shot in front of him. Had this happened two seasons ago, I would have stopped watching. But now, since there’s only an episode or two left, I’ll see it through if for no other reason than something has to happen to this guy. Some sort of justice in the end, you know?

So here’s my question for you today. Has there ever been a lead character in a book, movie, or TV show that you despised from the beginning? What character and why?

All From The Couch

Posted under That's Life Wednesdays 5 Comments

So here’s the deal. I’m a female who doesn’t like to shop. In fact, saying I “don’t like it” is quite the understatement.

Shopping literally exhausts me. I can go into a store or a mall with all the energy in the world and come out ten minutes later completely wiped out. Happens just about every single time.

The good news is: I don’t spend money on useless stuff.

The bad news is: If you saw me five years ago, I’m probably wearing the same basic stuff.

About eight months ago, I ventured onto the computer to look for a jumpsuit. I found one that looked good and…click…I purchased it. Without leaving home. 🙂

Surprisingly, it looked really good on me so I didn’t even have to worry about returning it.

The other night, I tried my luck again. I was up late, went on to the same site where I found the  jumpsuit and, sure enough, saw a dress I thought was really nice.  I clicked…and it’s on the way in the mail (I’m hoping it works as well as my first go-round with this alternative to dragging myself through a store).

This experience led me to today’s questions:

1) What’s the best what-the-heck-I’ll-try-it purchase you ever made?

2) What’s the worst?

You’re Invited To My Virtual Book Club

Posted under Reading Tuesdays 2 Comments

suspenderedsentencefbHave you read SUSPENDERED SENTENCE (my latest Amish Mystery written as Laura Bradford)? Is it on your TBR pile? Have you been meaning to pick it up and give it a read?

Well, now is the time to get a hold of SUSPENDERED SENTENCE and give it a read…

Next Tuesday night (the 31st), I’m hosting my first-ever Virtual Book Club to talk about the book! The event will start at 8 p.m. Eastern Time and will last an hour (you can come and go as you like).

The hour will be divided into four 15-minute segment threads.

8-8:15: We’ll talk about the series’ characters (where they started, how far they’ve come, and anything you want to discuss about them).

8:15-8:30: We’ll talk about the series’ setting (this can be about the fictional Heavenly and/or the Lancaster County, PA area in which it is based…you ask, we discuss).

8:30-8:45: We’ll talk specifics about SUSPENDERED SENTENCE (so bring your questions/comments).

8:45-9:00: Q & A. I’m a quick typist so I can answer your questions about the book, the series, my research, writing in general, etc. And it’s fun to read everyone else’s questions because they may spark others.

*I will have a few surprises in store throughout our hour together, so I think this will be a fun inaugural virtual book club night.

Sound fun? I hope to see some (even better, all) of you there!!

You can “join” this Facebook event by clicking HERE.

Dreamin’ Q & A

Posted under Dreamer Mondays 6 Comments

Here’s a few “dreamer” questions for all of you today…

1) If you could learn to play one instrument (that you can’t already play), what would it be and why?

2) If you could go back to school, what subject would you want to study and why?

3) If you could relive ONE day in your life (exactly the way it was the first time), what day would it be?

Can’t wait to read your answers!

Edible Bits

Posted under Bits & Pieces Fridays 6 Comments

Not sure if it’s because I just started a new book, or because my daughter is in the kitchen baking cookies while I’m writing this, but I’m feeling food-related bits (with one exception) today. And yes, the food ones are kind of focused on cookies… 😉

1) Favorite store-bought cookie?

2) Favorite homemade cookie?

3) Favorite beverage?

4) Is spring ever going to come?

Day One: The Blank Page

Posted under Writing Thursdays No Comments

I’m starting on a new book today. It’s a point I’ve been at many times, yet one that never loses its pull. To go from a completely blank document to one that will, eventually have around 300 double-spaced typewritten pages is kind of exciting. I’d like to be able to tell you I know every single thing that will happen along the way, but I can’t.

I know the basics, and even some of the twists (I can’t even start writing until I know who, why, and viable suspects)…but the conversations and poignant moments happen as I go (my favorite part, actually). Kinda like life, I guess.

The first chapter always takes a while for me, mainly because I want to make sure I’m starting the story in just the right place…and I want to make sure I’ve presented something interesting enough that my reader will want to keep reading when the chapter ends.

Once I feel I’ve got a firm foundation on which to build the rest, I’m off and running.

So that’s where I’m at today.

Any questions?
