My Day

Posted under That's Life Wednesdays 3 Comments

So I’m talking at a women’s club this afternoon with a friend/fellow author.  And while I have to pack a lot of things into my day before I travel down to NC to help a friend going through a tough time, I’m looking forward to it. I enjoy talking to groups about the Amish/my books/writing in general, but getting to do it with a friend is always fun. We know the questions to ask each other to get everyone loosened up quickly (aka laughs flowing), so it ends up being a ton of fun.

Very often, on “panels” we’re asking the same things: what’s our process, when do we write, what’s our favorite character, etc. And while all of that is fun to talk about, I really love the questions about our favorite moments on our writing journey, the cover we hated the most, the titles that made us cringe, what author we fan-girl over, etc.  Those are fun to answer.

Before I head off, here’s a trivia question for you.

Of all my titles, thus far (feel free to look at the books page of, which title do you think still makes me cringe today?

Up At Bat

Posted under Reading Tuesdays 6 Comments

After re-reading (and still liking) my own Deadly Getaway, I decided to reread the first in my Amish series, Hearse and Buggy.

So what are you reading right now? Are you enjoying it?

Three Things

Posted under Dreamer Mondays 6 Comments

Sandwiched between what was and will be very busy weekends, this one was relatively quiet. Still, I found three things to share…

Friday night, DH and I went to a comedy show. The guy was pretty over the top at times, but we still laughed and that’s always good.

Saturday, DD # 2 and I spent a little time playing Mario.  I was off my game, for some reason, but that just makes for more opportunity for laughing…

Saturday evening, it was time to hunker down (with chips & salsa, pizza, and chocolate chip cookie bars) with the X-men as in their Elite Eight game. My alma mater lost, but it was still fun to see them there!

And while it’s technically a fourth thing, Sunday was about writing and getting caught up on work-related stuff…all going slower than it should thanks to my messed up right wrist(severe tendonitis). Hopefully it will heal sooner rather than later.

Now tell us about your weekend.

Some writing-related questions for you today.

  1. Did you enjoy writing in school?
  2. Have you ever tried to write as an adult?
  3. If you did try to write today, what genre would you be most interested in giving a whirl?
  4. Pen/paper or straight on to computer?

A Little Less Late Than Normal

Posted under That's Life Wednesdays 6 Comments

old-style-tv-setI think I’ve mentioned around here at some point, that I’m a “late to the party” kind of gal when it comes to TV shows. Dexter was in its final season before I decided to track down Season 1 and give it a whirl. Castle was a solid four years in before I did the same with it. I’m just not a huge TV watcher–with the exception of Survivor, which I’ve watched every season since Day one.

But I’ve been reading a lot of good stuff (from people I like) about a show called, This is Us.  So rather than wait until four seasons in, I just gave the first two episodes a whirl just as the first season is wrapping up. I like it so far and feeling proud that I didn’t get to this particular party as late as normal.

So what are you watching these days?

Three Things (A Day Late)

Posted under Uncategorized 6 Comments

On account of my overnight flight that had me getting back home at 7 a.m. yesterday (and thus, heading straight for bed), I’m doing a “Three Things” From my Weekend today, instead. 🙂

On Friday, I flew to St. Louis for a neurology appointment. Since I had a little time between landing and my appointment, I stopped at a local B & N to return some email. In my inbox was this announcement from Publisher’s Marketplace:

Laura Bradford’s PORTRAIT OF A SISTER, the first in a new series, about a woman who struggles to make the choice between the Amish world in which she has grown up, or joining her sister to live among the “English,” and shunning herself from family and friends, to Esi Sogah at Kensington, in a two-book deal, for publication in Summer 2018, by Jessica Faust at BookEnds.

I knew, of course, this was happening, but I was waiting for the “official industry announcement” to share it with everyone. So now you know the big surprise I mentioned a while back. One note: that may/may not be the final title of the first book. I should know what it is soon. 🙂

Then, after my doc appointment and lunch with a friend, I drove back to the airport and boarded another flight…this one to Phoenix. By the time I got to sleep that night, I’d been up for 22 hours.

Saturday brought my event at Poisoned Pen Bookstore in Scottsdale. There were new faces in the audience, of course, but there were a few familiar ones, as well.  Like this lovely lady whom I met at this same bookstore last year when I was there signing Éclair and Present Danger.   She came back to see me/get The Silence of the Flans this time and brought this amazing cake that she actually made!!!!!  If you look closely, you’ll see there’s even a little “Lovey” on the hood of the dessert squad!

Also in the audience was a reader I first me twelve years ago. She’s from Chicago and is a huge Cubs fan. So she and her friends were in Scottsdale for spring training and decided to surprise me by coming to my event!!!

And, after the event, I went to lunch with several other authors including…*drum roll*…Linda Castillo.  If you read this blog, you know she is one of my very favorite authors. So to have her host the signing and get to hang with her afterward was pretty amazing.  She’s the one seated directly across from me at the table.

Then it was on to Tucson for a signing at Barnes & Noble on Sunday afternoon, and then back to the airport in Phoenix for a flight that night.

Now tell us three things from your weekend (a day late). 🙂

Your Must-Packs

Posted under odds and ends 2 Comments

Since I’ll be heading to Arizona this weekend (quick trip in/out) for some book signings, my mind is currently on packing. My goal is to keep it light on account of a) the quickness of the trip and b) my back is screaming at me thanks to the shoveling. But there are always must-have’s (beyond the standard clothes/personal hygiene items) when you travel, regardless of trip length.

I, of course, must bring: suitcase1

*My shots/injector…though trust me, I wish I could leave them home.

*My computer

*A treat of some sort for the plane.

Any must have’s for you when traveling by plane?
