Pet Peeves and More

Posted under Reading Tuesdays 6 Comments

bookbookmarkSince I’m away from home, I’m not hitting the gym every day. And since I’m not hitting the gym every day, I’m not reading as much. However, I did get a little elliptical time in at the fitness center here on the property yesterday morning, so I can say I’m still actively reading Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Ties the Knot.

Any free time I get is being spent writing.

So a few things for you this morning…

*What are you reading? Are you enjoying it? What is a pet peeve of yours in the genre of books you read? Anything that drives you batty?

Three Things

Posted under Dreamer Mondays 5 Comments

Another weekend has come and gone and thinking of three things to share is requiring a bit more brain power than I seem to have (the icky, cold weather isn’t helping). Still, I’ll give it a whirl…

Saturday was spent in the car as DH and I headed south to spend a little time in the Smokey Mountains. Unfortunately, this will be more of a working-vacation for me than I’d originally imagined, but I’ve got deadlines I can’t ignore.  That said, the drive was uneventful (always a good thing when traveling) and I got some paper-plotting done for my next project.

Sunday morning I got to work on Secret Project # 2.  The first few pages are usually tough for me as it takes a while to figure out where I want to “start” the story. But this time, it came easy. 🙂

Once my words for the day were done, we headed out to do a little poking around. I came thisclose to buying some really cute cowboy boots.  Still may go back and get them, but I’m trying to show restraint and think for a little while. 🙂  Although, with a store named after my one and only shopping vice, it’s questionable how successful I’ll be. 😉

bootbarnNow it’s your turn. Tell us three things from your weekend.

Spooky Bits

Posted under Bits & Pieces Fridays 5 Comments

happy-halloweenIn honor of Halloween being just around the corner, it seems appropriate we have themed bits today.  So here we go…

  1. Best costume you ever saw?
  2. Best costume you ever wore?
  3. Do you still dress up now?
  4. Back in the day, did you use a pillow case or a bucket when trick or treating?

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Lightening the Plate a Little

Posted under Writing Thursdays No Comments

I’ve been working on a secret project the past few weeks and, yesterday, I typed “the end.” So today and tomorrow is about reading/editing.

Then, come this weekend, I start on the bigger part of my secret project. 🙂  I know, I know, I’m being cryptic, but all will be revealed in time… 🙂

In a slightly related note, I took this picture yesterday for a black & white picture challenge I’ve been participating in. As you can see, I was getting ready to get to work.  A few hours later, when I finished, I got to put the computer away for a little while and take a walk.

So…any writing/book/series questions I can answer?

Forced Movement

Posted under That's Life Wednesdays 5 Comments

blackandwhite1I try to go to the gym five or six days a week. Sometimes, I hit that goal. Sometimes (like yesterday), I don’t. A lot of days I don’t want to go, but I’m always glad when I did.

My cardio of choice?

1) The elliptical (which I used to despise but now see as built-in reading time)

2) Stationary bike

3) A run on the treadmill

When I go, I always do # 1. What I do afterward is usually up for grabs–sometimes the bike, sometimes a run.

I shoot for two of the three each time I go because it’s important to me to keep my legs strong in the event the MS takes a turn.

Being a writer (who sits for an enormous chunk of the day), it’s good to start my day off with a gym work out, but I often wonder what good it does when I proceed to sit afterward for upwards of 8 hours. So now I’m goaling to work in a walk outside in the late afternoon as well. I figure the fresh air is needed since I’m rarely  outside, and getting the legs moving again can’t hurt.

So what exercise do you gravitate toward when you have the time/energy?

Current Reads

Posted under Reading Tuesdays 9 Comments

My current read at the gym is the 3rd book in Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic series (thank you, Andrea!), Shopaholic Ties The Knot.

They’re fun books, and fun is good. Especially as my own workload ratchets up ten-fold these next few months.

So what are you reading? How’s it going so far?

Three Fall Weekend Things

Posted under Dreamer Mondays 9 Comments

It was a happy weekend for me around here thanks to the 3-day fall weekend that had DD # 2 home from college! 🙂

I picked her up after classes on Thursday, made a dinner she requested via text earlier in the day (chicken teriyaki), and we watched It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on TV.

Friday we headed for the stores to replace some shoes Angus (the Cat) messed up while she was gone. I also got her some extra pajama pants since they wear those around the dorm all the time.

Later that evening, after yet another special dinner (pork loin with all the trimmings), we had a fire out back. Complete with s’mores, of course.

Saturday we got our nails done, played some Sequence, went out to a favorite Italian restaurant, and stopped at B & N for a school book for her and a treat for us.

Sunday, before it was time to take her back, we played more Sequence (I beat her 5 out of 5 games 🙂  ) and got some ice cream!

Then it was time to say goodbye. But, thankfully, the Thanksgiving break isn’t all that far away. 🙂

How was your weekend? Can you share three things?

Sleep Bits

Posted under Bits & Pieces Fridays 6 Comments

Last night, the 9 + days of traveling for work events, followed by the two back-to-back ones I did on Wednesday, caught up to me and I was exhausted. So I thought maybe we’d do some sleep-related bits today. 🙂

  1. In terms of blankets when it’s cold:  Over your shoulder or up to your nose?
  2. Side, stomach, or back sleeper?
  3. Room warm or room cool?
  4. Music/TV on or off?
  5. Snooze or get up the first time?

Have a great weekend, everyone! My youngest is home for the next few days and that makes me a very happy mom!

The Other Part of the Author Thing

Posted under Writing Thursdays 3 Comments

I’ve been doing a lot of reader events lately. In addition to the ones that had me traveling to upstate New York and Canada, I just did two more yesterday. And while it takes me away from my writing, it always reminds me of one of the things I’ve come to love most about my career. Getting to hang out with readers and talk to them about books, life, etc., is quite a lot of fun.

Back in the day, when I was first published, the in-person stuff was always hard for me. I’m more of an introvert by nature and part of the appeal of writing for me had always been the anonymity aspect.  I figured, I’d write it and that was it.

Then I was actually published and I soon learned that authors do talks…and signings…and more talks.  And by talks, I mean in front of people–sometimes rather large groups.

I’ll never forget the first time I stood up and had to talk. It felt like my mouth was full of cotton balls and I couldn’t wait to be done.

Fast forward to now, and not only is the cotton feeling gone, but I actually really enjoy it. I think most of that is because I like sharing what I’ve learned and I like being around readers.

I’ve come along way since that first book was published in 2005, that’s for sure.

So how about you? Are you okay talking in front of people? What’s the largest group you’ve ever spoken in front of and what was it for?

Take Your Pick

Posted under That's Life Wednesdays 9 Comments

old-style-tv-setI thought we’d try a little something different (and, hopefully, laugh-worthy) around here today.

I’m going to throw out a few well-known TV shows (older ones), and I want you to tell us (per show) which one character (not actor) you wouldn’t mind hanging out with and why. You can answer as current you or past you, it’s your choice.   Your selection/reason can be funny, serious, whatever. If you aren’t familiar with the show, feel free to take a pass on that one.

Here we go…

  1. Brady Bunch
  2. Friends
  3. Seinfeld
  4. Bugs Bunny

I’m looking forward to your answers…
